In memory of

Christiana "Grandma" Abankwa

Christiana Amma Serwah Abankwa was born in Obo, Eastern Region of Ghana, to Daniel Yaw Abankwa and Yaa Konadu on June 27, 1928.

She moved to Accra at a very early age and attended Accra Bishop Girls School. After completing school, she trained to become a seamstress. She later got married and was blessed with 9 children.

Amma Serwah became well known as Auntie Christie or Auntie in short. she was very resourceful and hardworking. She was very committed to the welfare and wellbeing of all her children. She was committed to providing them with the best of everything, including food, clothing, shelter and education.

While raising her family, Auntie held multiple jobs including Seamstress, petty trading and later, Sand and Stone Contracting.

After raising her children, her attention shifted to her Grand and Great grandchildren. This meant that, she would travel around the world to different countries and cities like London - England, Atlanta and New York – USA, and Toronto and Ottawa - Canada to visit her children and help care for her Grand and Great grandchildren.

In 1986, she and her last two children migrated to Toronto where she planted her new roots away from Ghana. Due to her hardworking nature, she attended adult high school to upgrade her English and Math skills, all while caring for her grandchildren. She later attended George Brown College where she trained as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) and worked as a home care provider until she retired. In recent years, as the Lord continued to bless her with more descendants, she became more popularly known as Grandma.

Grandma was a very devoted and practicing Christian who always prayed for and counselled her family and friends. She was a pioneer and active member of The All Nations Full Gospel Church. Since Grandma became a member, she would never miss a church service unless she was away from the city or was too sick to attend. Grandma loved to sing. Even as she aged, she continued to worship with her beautiful melodies as a member of the Ghanaian choir.

Grandma was an extremely charitable and giving person, paying for people's education, giving money to those in need and donating clothes to the less fortunate. She was positive and energetic, independent, youthful and cheerful, very stylish and fashionable, and had a great sense of humor.

She is survived by 25 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren.
We love you Grandma. Your legacy will live on forever.
Rest in perfect peace.

Auntie, what an honorable woman of God you were. You lived out your Christian faith not by words alone but more importantly by your actions. To you, family was not just about you and your children. You took on the direct responsibility of the well being of many of us in the family. Thank you for taking me and loving me as your very own daughter and always encouraging me with the word of God.
I will miss you Auntie and will always cherish you.
May your soul rest in God’s all enduring perfect peace.
