陳松 Chong Chan
March 23, 1930 - November 20, 2015
With great sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved father Chong Chan on Friday, November 20th, 2015 at the age of 85 at Union Villa Long-Term Care Home after a long battle of the Alzheimer disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Shui-Lan Ding; son Kwok Leung (Eric) Chan and his wife Irene Leung, daughter Yuen Fusselman and her husband Leonard Fusselman III, son Kwok Hung (Sunny) Chan and his wife Bonnie Au Yeung; grandson Leonard Fusselman IV (Quad), granddaughter Amber Fusselman, granddaughter Gloria Chan, granddaughter Crystal Chan, and grandson Jeffery Chan.
Dad was the only son born to Wui Leung and Li Yad Chan in China on March 23, 1930. His great intellect and thirst for learning were recognized at a very young age by his teacher, who allowed him to attend school without paying tuition. His education was abruptly cut short with the outbreak of the 2nd World War. Starting as an apprentice to an experienced interior painter at the age of 13, Dad quickly mastered his interior painting skills with fortitude, creativeness, and attention to detail. With this under his belt, he raised three children with mom – his hard-working wife.
In spite of the little formal education he had received, Dad was a true “gentleman.” He continued to expand his knowledge through reading and inspired people with his kindness, courteous, intelligent, and outstretched helping hands. He loved his mom whole-heartedly with great respect and touched everyone’s heart wherever he went.
Dad was a huge part of his grandchildren’s childhood. His granddaughter Amber remembered him fondly, “Grandpa helped raise me. Any memory I have of him, he was either smiling or laughing. I don’t remember a single moment he wasn’t with grandma. They were always together. And to me, that is perfection. Because love and happiness go together, and they were a living example of that.”
Sadly, this kind, intelligent man was struck down by the Alzheimer disease four years ago. His wife, children, grandchildren, and friends watched his health and mind deteriorating helplessly without any remediation, and often wondered how much he had suffered physically and mentally, due to his inability to communicate and being bounded to his inside world.
With his passing, we will miss dad’s gentle presence. However, we are glad that he is going to a much better world and released from suffering. We know that he will be watching over us in spirit with love, leading us every step of the way.
