In memory of
Ching Yuan Hsu
February 11, 1952 -
October 10, 2024
Born in Ping Tung, Taiwan on February 11, 1952. Growing up in Taiwan, Ching was raised to be close with his siblings and continued that into adulthood. Ching-Yuan attended Taiwan Tamkang University before immigrating to Canada in 1978. Once in Canada, he attended graduate school at the University of Western Ontario.
In February of 1982 Ching and Robert met through mutual friends in Toronto. Ching and Robert lived at the apartment buildings 191 & 201 Sherbourne St. At this time Ching was working for the software company, Walter Maves & Associates Limited. He had started with the company in 1980 as a programmer analyst and by 1986 he had worked his way up to being a project manager.
After a year of getting to know each other, on July 15, 1983, Ching and Robert left for a 25-day bus tour of Europe. Ching said this was the test of all tests; if they were still friends after these 25 days, it proved they could live together. With that being said, in 1984 they bought their first home together; a two-story brick home at 453 Donlands Ave in Toronto.
In 1989 Ching joined N. C. Cameron & Sons, a leading Canadian giftware distributor that later became known as Enesco Canada. Over the years, he rose to the position of Director of Management Information Systems. After 23+ years of work, Ching retired from Enesco Canada at the end of 2012 (literally!), spending part of New Year’s Eve packing up the last of his office stuff. Ching and Robert made it home just in time to watch the ball drop in Times Square.
During their time together, Ching and Robert travelled around Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. Sometimes to participate in family reunions and sometimes simply to travel together and see the world. Ching and Robert enjoyed painting and took painting, drawing and water colour classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Ching was a very determined man - in 2007 he received a ticket claiming he ran a red light while making a turn - he took it to court and WON!
On July 31, 2018, while under observation following the insertion of three stents in his heart, Ching suffered a seven-minute cardiac arrest. He was revived following seven shocks from the defibrillator. He started cardiac rehabilitation on October 3, 2018 and completed cardiac rehabilitation on March 20, 2019.
In 2022, Ching and Robert made the decision to sell their home on Donlands Ave and moved into a condominium apartment on York Mills Road.
Ching passed away from stomach cancer on October 10, 2024 at Sunnybrook Hospital.
Ching leaves behind his loving partner of 42 years, Robert. He’s predeceased by his parents Yen Ming and Ching Ying Hsu, and his brothers-in-law Harry Chiang and Ryan Chang. Ching was the loving brother to Gan Yi, Ching Ping, Beryl and Ming. He was the beloved uncle to nieces and nephews - Felicia, Serena, Yu How, Andrew, Steve, Brian and Albert. Ching always treated people with kindness and gentleness and was always considerate and compassionate. His patience and adventurous nature were evident in his hobbies of painting, travelling, and enjoying movies.
Ching will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
