Catherine Broughton Marshall
November 2, 1945 - November 10, 2015
Dr. Catherine Margaret Broughton Marshall
November 2, 1945 - November 10, 2015
Catherine passed away peacefully at home after celebrating her 70th birthday with family. For 9½ years Catherine beat back cancer’s advance by embracing life, with Joe always by her side. During this time she continued as a physician; involved herself in the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto, the Toronto Botanical Club, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Toronto, bridge, book clubs, coffee group and the Sarah Group; travelled; spent time with her children and indulged in the joys of being a grandparent.
Following graduation from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1968, Catherine embarked on a rich and fulfilling professional and volunteer career. She was on Active Staff at York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill and served as President of the Medical Staff Association in 1989 all the while raising three children, running an active family practice in Thornhill and working at the Scarborough Sexual Health Clinic. During that time she served on and chaired the Board of Governors at Holy Trinity School, was President of the Baptiste Lake Cottagers Association and was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Hospice Thornhill and the Out of the Cold programme.
Catherine was predeceased by her father, Harold Broughton and mother, Esther Johnson. She is survived by her loving husband and classmate, Joe Marshall; children, Adam (Sarah), Alyssa and Erik (Kathryn); grandchildren, Emma, Hudson, Robert and Henry; sister, Thora (George); brother, Alan (Heather); nephews, David, Benjamin, Samuel and Avery; as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond. Catherine was much loved by the extended Broughton and Marshall families as well as her friends, trusted by her patients and respected by her peers. Catherine influenced many lives for the better and will be remembered for her dedication, loyalty, intelligence and grace.
The family wishes to thank the following medical professionals for their exceptional care and compassion over the course of the last 9½ years: Dr. Maureen Trudeau and the staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre; Dr. Arjun Sahgal at the Sunnybrook Research Institute and Dr. Kevin Bezanson and the team from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Friends are invited to visit the family on Thursday, November 19th between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, M4T 2V8 (east gate entrance between Moore Avenue and Merton Street). A cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 21st at 11 a.m. at St. Aidan's Anglican Church, 70 Silver Birch Avenue, Toronto, M4E 3K9; street parking only. A reception will follow at the Balmy Beach Club, 360 Lake Front, at the foot of Beech Avenue, Toronto, M4E 1A7 (walking distance from the Church). In lieu of flowers and if desired, the family requests that donations in memory of Catherine be directed to the "Odette Cancer Centre" care of The Sunnybrook Foundation at https://donate.sunnybrook.ca.
