In memory of

Carol Anne Sykes

October 7, 1944 -  August 29, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Carol Anne Sykes (nee Sharpley) on August 29, 2022. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Al Sykes. Carol will be forever missed by her son, Ryan Sykes and daughter-in-law, Shaunessy Sykes (nee Joyce). Her memory and legacy will live on through her grandchildren, Witten Sykes, 5, and Cooper Sykes, 3. She was the cherished aunt of Eric Goodwin (Jennifer; and children Jordyn and Georgia), Laura Bowen (Liam; and child Caleb), Charene Beltramo (Ron), Dayna Sykes, Nicole McLeod (Kevin), Mark Sykes (Kim McLean; and son); and great-aunt to many . She will be fondly remembered by her brother-in-laws, Bob Goodwin (late wife Sandra), Eric Sykes (Margaret) and sister-in-law, Beverly Sykes.

Carol loved being outdoors tending to her many gardens, watching the Jays play, and listening for loons at the cottage. She enjoyed a variety of creative arts and crafts including her spectacular wrapping abilities. In the summer months, Carol could be found picking strawberries and eating most of what she picked. Her love of baking many different desserts and dishes from memory, some of her favourites included Mince Meat Pie, and her beloved Lemon Curd. She found great pleasure in spending time hunting for unique gifts for her grandchildren and other loved ones. She adored spending as much time as possible with her many dear friends, having long phone conversations and most of all spending time with her grandchildren; watching them swim and baking together.

Carol spent two decades working at Holland Bloorview Children’s Hospital as a receptionist, where she warmly greeted everyone who walked through the front doors. She was known by all who knew her for her endless generosity and selflessness. She cared deeply for everyone in her life and leaves an emptiness in all of our lives.

Carol and I were childhood friends from age 1 to 10 when I moved away, first to Scarborough, then to Peterborough, then to near Seattle and finally to near London, England.
Carol found me again 52 years after I left Carlaw Avenue in Toronto on the occasion when I was in Cobourg, having come from my home in England for my mother’s funeral.
After finding each other and resuming our cherished friendship , I returned home to England after the funeral but Carol and I stayed in touch, emailing very, very often through our remaining years until she passed away,
May my dearest childhood friend rest in peace.

Carol was such a friendly, warm addition to the neighborhood. I loved her lemon curd jelly which I got to sample yearly. Her smile and conversation will be missed by all.
