In memory of

Can Wing Chan

April 30, 1934 -  October 12, 2025

Can Wing Chan, was born on April 30, 1934 in Hong Kong. At a young age, he lost his mom due to illness and had a stepmom along with some step siblings enter his life a few years later. He grew up with a fondness of chess. It didn’t matter whether it was Chinese chess or regular chess. He would read books on Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparaov with regards to their evolution as chess masters. When he was in high school he had a great desire to become an engineer. He would enter the National Taiwan University and in June 1960, he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering.

Shortly after, he met my mom, Chiu Ngor Chan, and got married on February 6, 1967 in the colony of Hong Kong. They then made the big decision of immigrating to Canada and eventually became a Canadian citizen on August 22, 1973. They first lived in Windsor for a few years and then decided to make their roots in Toronto.

Can Wing Chan worked for many companies, some of which would send him to New York, Texas, Ottawa and Japan to complete various projects. Can Wing Chan was a resilient man. In 1995, he overcame prostate cancer and various other health issues. His health continued to decline over the last 5 years with kidney issues and eventually dementia. On October 12, 2025, Can Wing Chan, succumbed to his battle with kidney disease and left behind his wife, Chiu Ngor, his son, Alan, his daughter in law, Shihping and his 2 grandchildren, Charlotte and Caleb.

In lieu of flowers, we would like to encourage people to make donations by writing a cheque made out to "Tendercare Residence Support Group" and can be dropped off at the ceremony.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Chan’s father. Although It sounds like he was a resilient, kind, and devoted man, and a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren, whom I have had the pleasure of teaching. My heartfelt condolences to Alan and the Chan family. May his memory be a comfort and a blessing during this difficult time.

It is an honor to hear and know of the achievements your father made to give your family healthy and joyful lives. May your father find rest in all the labor he did in his life.
