In memory of

Bridget "Phyllis" Lohan

April 8, 1936 -  April 30, 2020

Phyllis passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Thursday April 30.

She was born Bridget Philomena Hallissey in the Village of Scarriff in east County Clare, Ireland.

Sadly, missed by her beloved children Annette (Michael) and Michael (Rose) and her grandchildren whom she loved and adored Jennifer, Kristopher, Luca and Lia.
Predeceased by her parents Patrick and Mary, Sisters Eilis, Maureen, Kitty and brother Tom.

Phyllis will be dearly missed by her surviving brothers Paddy and Donal as well as nieces and nephews in England.

As a child growing up, she enjoyed exploring the Irish country side with her brothers and sisters.
She excelled in school, and upon graduation Phyllis would move to England to be with her older sister Eilis to pursue her dreams.

In 1957 she took the RMS Queen Elizabeth from England to New York and made her way to Toronto Canada. There she met and married Joseph Lohan and raised their two children Annette and Michael.

As children, Annette and Michael were always active out side playing, riding their bikes and going swimming at the local community centre. The only rule was to be home for dinner.

Phyllis enjoyed hosting dinners and having parties. There was a great community of Irish expats
who got together to celebrate the holidays and listen to Irish music.

Phyllis loved bringing her children to Ireland and England to visit family and to learn about their Irish heritage.

One of her fondest memories was travelling with her sister Eilis and brother-in-law Paddy to visit their cousins in Boston.

Travels with friends throughout the years extended to various places in the USA and the Caribbean.

Professionally Phyllis was a Book Keeper for many years and worked for both private and corporate companies.

She loved visits from her grandchildren and enjoyed hearing about their lives. Hugs and Kisses abounded.

Although divorced for many years Phyllis and Joseph remained friends. They enjoyed family gatherings and being together to celebrate their children and grandchildren’s celebrations.

Phyllis was an avid reader and would usually have two books on the go at the same time.

The Family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to family and friends at home and abroad for all the support, well wishes and prayers during this difficult time.

Due to current restrictions a Private Funeral Service with immediate family will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery on Monday May 4 at 1:00pm

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Phyllis to your local food bank, or a charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated.

I have fond memories growing up with Joe, Phyllis, Annette and Michael. I remember my mom and Phyllis talking on the phone at night for hours. My mother and Phyllis were very good friends. I’m so happy that my mom and Phyllis had a chance to see each other before my mom passed away. This was all thanks to Annette who arranged the visit. My heart is with you all and I will keep beloved Phyllis in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all. Your friend, Patricia.🙏🏻❤️

My heart felt condolences.
Some of my earliest memories are with you all when we lived on Beresford, off Bloor and near Runnymead in the very early 1960s through to when we moved to Willowdale and into our days in Markham. We had many great times together. Phyllis was a loving woman and a big heart and my mother loved her. I don't know who met whom first, your mom and my mom or our dads, but we had a good bonding friendship for a good dozen years.
Rest in peace, Phyllis.

Such a lovely obituary, a snapshot of the Irish diaspora in the middle of the last century and its impact on the world. She leaves a fantastic legacy in Annette and Michael who will ensure her memory is cherished for the future generations. Ar dheis go raibh an anam de.
