In memory of

Bing Yen Tom

February 20, 1932 -  November 19, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bing Yen Tom, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Aged 88, he departed on November 19th, 2020, surrounded by family in his long-time home in Toronto.

Born in Guangdong, China, Bing Yen immigrated to Newfoundland, Canada alone at the young age of nineteen, travelling by train to eastern Ontario. He settled in Toronto, Ontario, and married Chung Ping in 1958. To all those who knew him, Bing Yen was loved and respected for his integrity, and his compassion, for he was willing to quietly sacrifice much to help those who needed it.

He enjoyed a good meal, was a devoted follower of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was known to spend endless hours maintaining weed-free gardens. He was proud to wager a bet at the horse track and see his long shot horse in the winning circle. Above all, he loved to spend time with family. To us he has passed down a strong work ethic gained from decades in the restaurant industry, a resolute will, and a determined sincerity by which we look to others and to the world.

Bing Yen is survived by his wife, Chung Ping, his children Weeman (Nancy), Kerry (Karen), Diana, and Albert; and his grandchildren, Lauren, Kathleen, Jeremy and Hayley. His warmth and spirit shall forever live inside us.

Bob and I are very sorry to lose our dear neighbour, Mr. Bing Tom. For over 40 years, we have lived side by side with him and his family. He was a gentle and kind man, who took great pride in his garden and his family.

Our deepest condolences go out to Mrs. Tom, Weeman, Kerry, Diana and Albert, who have also been wonderful neighbours over the years.

So sorry for you loss. I have always been impressed with your Dad’s beautiful garden and enjoyed his friendly smiles when we came home for visits.
