In memory of

許炳鈞 Bing Hoy

October 8, 1931 -  January 24, 2022

Bing Hoy passed away peacefully in the morning of January 24th at the age of 90 due to complications from long-standing health issues. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lily; his 6 children and their partners, Shirley (Hui Chiang), Edmond (Bonnie), Philip (Marie-Claire), Rita (Andrew), Roland (Lee) and Gordon (Josie); his four grandchildren and partner, Dane, Michael (Patty), Austin and Stephanie.

Born in Sun Wai, Guangdong, China, Bing immigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s to assist his parents in running a laundry business in Toronto; and shortly thereafter, he started to build a family. Bing was a proud but reserved man who had strong work ethics which enabled him to buy his own house in Toronto’s east end. He became a driver for a dry-cleaning business and had the opportunity to meet and provide service to many people across the GTA which included various political elites like the late Governor General of Canada, Roland Michener, and the late Ontario Premier, Bill Davis.

Bing was also admired for his strong family values, as well as his generosity -- qualities which he bestowed on his children. In his spare time, he volunteered at the local Chinese association and played cards with his buddies. He adored his grandchildren and was often seen handing out money whenever they visited.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private family gathering, and interment will take place at Pine Hills Cemetery located in Scarborough. The Service will be available for viewing via live stream on Wednesday February 2, 2022 at 11 am. To access the live stream, please click on the link provided below. I met my father in law Bing 44 years ago after dating Ed for a few weeks. Bing was warm, friendly, outgoing and understandably cautious about our relationship. He was the King of his castle and made me feel welcomed at his table and family events. Over time our bond was solidified and Bing included my family. He created a strong loyal family that I am lucky and proud to be a member of and he worked hard for his money celebrating with banquet style meals made by Lily and the girls. This generous man handed red envelopes to his family at all occasions and anybody else who was around He volunteered his time to the Chinese Association where Dane and Austin enjoyed the community banquets as they learned more about the traditions and culture. In his heart of gold , Bing gave more than he received. His generosity is his legacy and I thank him for that and I will miss him.

My deepest condolences to the Hoy family in your loss of a wonderful patriarch, Mr Bing Hoy.
As a youngster growing up next door, I will always remember his constant infectious smile and his penchant to strike up a friendly conversation; such a great neighbour! He would often speak fondly of his children to others as well. In retrospect, I recall the nice relationship he had with my Dad and Mom, especially during those socials out on the front porch.
In short, Bing Hoy lived up to his name honourably. From Knob Hill to Pine Hill
... what a journey to cherish!
May God receive him and bless his wife and offsprings to enable them to heal and carry on in a rich and fulfilling way; how he would have desired.
Peace and love to all affected by this immense sadness.

Life Stories

Bing Hoy was born in 1931, in the southern Chinese Province of Guangdong. Like many people during the time of the Second World War, locals flocked to seek a better life with many migrating to other parts of the world – Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, United States, Canada, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom.

Bing’s parents moved to Canada first, paving the way to this “land of opportunity” and soon after, established a laundry business quite similar to what Xinhui laundrymen and shopkeepers did back home. Bing gladly joined his parents to assist with the family operation. A few years later, he returned to China and eventually married the love of his life, Lily.

Times were not easy for them but that didn’t stop them from chasing their dream to have a family and to be a good Canadian citizen. Home life became very busy as they raised six children and cemented the foundation to home ownership, moving across the City of Toronto. Each home just seemed to get bigger and closer to the amenities needed to support his family.

Bing took great pride in being a long-standing member of a few Chinese social organizations and supporting fellow Xinhuinese who have moved to the city. He was a great event organizer, greeter and enjoyed the presence of families coming together to share a meal, banquet style. How he loved to play games during these events and to hand out prizes. Having fun was part of his DNA and he relished those moments of making new friends and maintaining existing relationships. Every now and then, he would boast about some of the local dignitaries he’s met – from celebrities, media personnel, politicians and lawyers.

Even after Bing’s retirement, he spent more time with friends and family. He enjoyed travelling to places like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, cruising the Caribbean islands and returning to Hong Kong and China.

While he started to face the daunting challenges of getting older, Bing finally agreed to reside at a local retirement home with his wife. They really enjoyed the visits from family and the grandchildren; to day trips to his children’s homes, celebrating birthdays, going to the casino, and enjoying great food and company at local restaurants.

Bing leaves a living legacy through his family – his wife (Lily), six children and their spouses/partners, plus four beloved grandchildren. The essence and riches of his life can be summed up as follows:

LOVE – FAMILY – HARD WORK – GENEROSITY - RELATIONSHIPS

He will forever be a Guardian Angel.
