Billings Chan 陳偉達

July 23, 1964 - March 30, 2020

Billings Chan passed away peacefully the morning of March 30th, 2020, at the age of 55. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 28 years, Yvonne, and his 3 sons: Calvin, Matthew, and Kyle.

Billings was born in Hong Kong on July 23rd, 1964. In 1981, he moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland to study at Booth Memorial High School where he met his future wife. He graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1989. After working in the aviation industry for more than 10 years, he co-founded Aviya Aerospace Systems in 2002 where he continued to work until his passing.

He will always be remembered for his cheerful, gentle, caring, and kind personality and for always having a smile on his face. He will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his love to his family, and as a role model for his children. Billings' positive attitude towards life, his never give up mentality, and his determination throughout the battle with brain cancer has been an inspiration to all.

The funeral will be held on Monday, April 13th, 2020 at 2pm. Due to Coronavirus, the funeral is required to be a private event for family only. The funeral will be live streamed and the link will be updated here when available. The recording will also be accessible in the video section after the service. Billy's gentle quiet but perserverance spirit,
his trust in God during his struggle with his illness is an inspiration to us.

Billings,
I was devastated to hear about your passing. I can’t believe this could happen to someone as wonderful. You have been a great boss, mentor and friend. One of the smartest people I know.

I’ll miss the days we spent at the old Argentina basement office with the old crew working around the clock to meet testing deadlines. Even when everyone was passing out due to lack of sleep you were still sleep-working and sleep-talking to yourself to push us over the finish line! Much respects!

I had no chance to meet Billy but I was lucky to get hired in a company that he was one of the founders. Thank you Billy and rest in peace.

I Would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family. May the soul of him be at peace. My most sincere condolences.

Billings and I studied Electrical Engineering at Memorial University together. Our engineering class was not big and almost all courses except a few electives were taught in the same classroom. Only a handful of us were from Hong Kong so we were quite close. I remembered Billings always dozing off at class. As a result, some professors sometimes called him out to answer questions. Somehow he could give the answer every time. He has the skill of napping and listening at the same time. It looked amazing but we all know that he was studying hard.

Back then, Billings ate a lot and never gained any weight. He remained slim and fit. One work term, Billings, Kirk, and I were in Ottawa. We went to a Chinese restaurant to have supper. There were a few set dinners with two, four, and six dish meals. We decided that the four dish meal was not very good so we picked the six dish one. Guess what? We finished every bit of the food. That was one good old day that I always remember.

Billings is kind and caring. He and Yvonne drove from Toronto to Ottawa to attend my wedding. He volunteered to videotape the whole wedding ceremony for us. Every time my wife and I watch it, we think about Billings.

We will all have our own personal and special memories of the mark Billings left in our hearts. I will always remember his cheerfulness and kindness. He will be missed by us all.
