In memory of

Bill George

July 6, 1945 -  August 26, 2017

Died peacefully at Toronto Western Hospital on Saturday, August 26, 2017 with his beloved wife, Barbara Jackel, at his side.
Bill was loved and will be profoundly missed by Barbara, his brother Tom (Suzanne) and Barbara's siblings, Paul (Nancy), Ruth (Werner), Peter, Heather, Jane, Sarah, Michael, and Dennis (Joan), as well as many nieces and nephews, in particular Jess and Lincoln, and dear friends Paul Thompson and Michel Bérubé.
Bill was seldom seen without his pipe, a book in his hand, and a smile on his face. He was an excellent cook and his Chinese dinners will be fondly remembered by all who ate them. He loved the outdoors: cycling, x-country skiing, hiking on the Bruce Trail or overseas, and gardening, both at home and as a volunteer in the Spadina Museum gardens. He also spent a great deal of time in the East and was fluent in Mandarin.
But Bill was most knowledgeable and passionate about beer. He brewed many award-winning beers and was a certified beer judge. So raise a glass of your favourite craft beer in his honour.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. David Tang-Wai of Toronto Western Hospital for his kindness, support, and compassion.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bruce Trail Conservancy (brucetrail.org) or to "City of Toronto, Spadina Museum".
Cremation will be private. Friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the GSU Pub, University of Toronto, 16 Bancroft Ave. (utgsu.ca/pubcafe).

Just look at that kind and gentle face! We loved Bill, cherished his friendship as well as Barb's ever since that memorable Corfu hike in 2008. We've had fun with the Corfu hikers at each year's reunion. it will be sad indeed not to have Bill and Barb with us this year.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I know you spent many great times together, hiking in a variety of countries, including our own beautiful Bruce Trail. You will have many memories to cherish. Thinking of you, Fionnuala and Wes.

Dear Barb,

Sending sincere condolences to you at this time. We've had no contact for many years, and I did not know Bill. Anne let me know the news.

We hope that the good memories that you and Bill made together will help you to cope with the difficult days as they come. He sounds like he was a wonderful, accomplished man, and it would have been nice to have known him.

Please take care of yourself, and know that so many others have you in their hearts and thoughts.

Sincerely,
Merike & Ron

Bill probably read it in the original Chinese: “Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”
― Lao Tzu

He was the kindest person I've ever known. The most modest of virtues lives on with indestructible strength. I thank him for the inspiration.
