In memory of

Bernice Elaine Metz

January 24, 1935 -  February 19, 2025

Bernice Elaine Metz, devoted wife and mother, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025 at the age of 90 after suffering a stroke and complications from other ailments.

Bernice Metz was born in Clarendon, Jamaica in 1935 and immigrated to Canada in 1967. After graduating nursing school at the University of the West Indies, she embarked on a career as a nurse in such places as Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and the University of Guelph Infirmary, ending her career at Baycrest Home for the Aged in North York.

Nicknamed affectionately as Kitty, she is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bazil, and her children, Marielle and Shaun, as well as siblings Pearl, Ovril, Eda, Ralph, Fay, and Viveen. She is predeceased by siblings Ernie, Evan, Henley, Weston, Effie,
Trevor and Raymond.

Kitty served diligently in all the churches she was involved with. She led children’s ministries over the years. In addition to her love of children she loved sending letters and cards of encouragement to young people away at school or ministries abroad.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to give a donation in her honour to any of the following four charities:

Mrs. Metz’s life was a beautiful testament to love, service, and unwavering faith. As a devoted wife, mother, sister, nurse, and friend, she touched countless lives with her kindness and compassion. Her journey from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to Canada was one of strength and purpose, dedicated to the care of others—whether in hospitals, churches, or her own home.

Her hands brought healing, her words offered encouragement, and her presence brought comfort. Through her work as a nurse, she cared for the sick; through her service in the church, she nurtured young hearts; and through her countless letters and acts of kindness, she uplifted those far from home. She gave selflessly, not only to those closest to her but to everyone blessed to cross her path.

Although I never had the familial opportunity to call her "Kitty" or "Bernice", Mrs. Metz’s legacy is one of faith in action—a life lived with open arms and an open heart. Though she is no longer physically here, her love, wisdom, and kindness will continue to resonate through the many lives she touched. May we all carry forward the light she so generously shared.

My heartfelt condolences to you Marielle, Shaun and Mr. Metz for the loss of your mother and wife. Bernice was a lovely woman and I was thrilled that she was my texting mate where we exchanged uplifting songs or scripture and some comical moments. Her physical presence will be sorely missed, however we are heartened that she is with our Lord Jesus and I pray that brings you comfort. I thank God for Marielle and the family for the diligent care they provided their mother in the last few years. May the Lord envelope you in His loving arms.
