In memory of

Bernadette Parsons-Slingerland

February 2, 1959 -  June 21, 2025

It is with broken hearts that we share news of the passing of Bernadette Parsons Slingerland. After a lengthy illness, Berni passed away on June 21, 2025 peacefully at home. She leaves behind her daughter Dr. Neeltje Slingerland, her Aunt Helen of St. John’s, NFLD, many friends, and three sisters. Berni will be missed by the many individuals she touched through her volunteer work for various non-profits, her long career, and by the Canadian rowing community.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Berni was the youngest of four daughters born to Marie and Gordon Parsons. She graduated from George Brown College with a diploma in Medical Administration, and had a successful career in downtown Toronto. She immersed herself in rowing, the arts, and in her garden where she found immense peace.

Berni was unstoppable and saw the potential in everyone. She had a passion for great food and wine, and (fortunately) for hosting her friends and family for truly spectacular meals home made with love. She will be remembered for her quick wit, selfless generosity, undeniable determination, and creativity.

While her physical presence may be gone, her impact lives on in the medical advancements she contributed to, kindness shown to others, and joy found in the simple pleasures of life: a blooming flower, a chirping cardinal, a calm lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:

The message about Bernadette's passing was beautifully written, and we feel grateful that it was shared with us.

Our hearts go out to the family as they navigate this time of change, reflection, and loss. Much love from Xylem, Jess, and Mathieu.

Oh Berni: You are a great friend: compassionate, accepting, supportive, and, above all, loving. You touched my life in so many ways. I will always think of you when I face challenges; you are the bravest person I know. Despite the distance separating us, I would always think, if Berni can face this excruciating trial with grace, so can I. Oh my friend, I hope that you are at peace, joyful in a life without pain. You touched so many people with your grace, courage, and beauty. I love you. Irene

I am so sad that Berni has passed away, it was wonderful that we were able to reconnect over the past year, and we were able to meet up twice in Toronto. I knew that the end was coming for her, although I did not know the date. Unfortunately I was not able to make it down for her memorial service on short notice.
Berni and I go back close to 40 years, and she was always very special to me. In another time and place we could have been so much more for each other. A party weekend of friends when I worked in Noranda Quebec, summer of 1977 is a cherished memory, especially when Berni and I were hanging out on a rock outcrop. After that, we went out own ways, Berni got married and I pursued an engineering career in different locations.
In the past year , we talked about many things we could have done, didn't really do any of those things. She is and will be forever special to me.
