In memory of

Barrie Ivan Dykes

November 16, 1935 -  November 20, 2021

On November 20, 2021, our dearest Barrie gently merged with that pure Self, which he had been meditating on all these years.

He first studied Hatha yoga at the Yoga Institute in Mumbai under Master Yogendra – which led to his meeting Swami Chinmayananda in Toronto, where he found his true calling in Vedanta, signing up for a 2 ½ year course in Mumbai, Sandeepany. During that time he also met and was enormously inspired by Nasargadat Maharaj.

Barrie brought this depth of wisdom of Vedanta to Toronto seekers – with his working knowledge of Sanskrit and ready reference to the scriptures - devoted himself to teaching his students, every Sunday for over 30 years.

He brought a cheery disposition, warm hug and personal interest to each and everyone he knew – it would be hard to imagine anyone in Barrie’s life, not calling him ‘friend’ – and he had many – even captivating the nurses, who enjoyed a special fondness for him and his gentle, ever present humour.

He will surely be missed by friends, the Toronto Chinmaya Mission community and his family in Manchester.
Om shanti shanti shanti

The White Eagle of the North,
A Moody Blues Song he loved .
He repeated the first lines of the Lyrics when calling a Friend.
His sense of Humour was unique and his connection to people
was elevated when starting his Journey via Yoga first and then
Vedanta.
Om Shanti

Barrie, we all know and Love the "character" that you are. You can be reverent,
in speaking of Spiritual Matters, caring and empathetic towards everyone and self effacing in speaking of yourself. Your humor, sometimes off the wall, along with your
strong opinions on everything, especially the price of Gas and the habits of politicians, encourages us all not to take ourselves too seriously.

You have encouraged all of us to look for the Spirit within and in this way you are remembered. Until we meet again, Chris

I met Barry in Uttarkashi, India. In 1983. We became friends, and he taught me one of the Vedanta scriptures, Atmabodh. I will always remember how dedicated he was. I was a student of yoga.
Later , in Canada, we reconnected and remained friends for all these years, meeting regularly for coffee, and he would join our family for dinner and discussions. We always discussed spiritual life, and the philosophy of Vedanta. My husband and my daughter Karuna always enjoyed his company. May his light continue to shine.
