Augoula Rapos

March 18, 1929 -  January 18, 2018

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Augoula "Goula" Rapos on January 18, 2018 at the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket, Ontario after a long illness with Progressive Supranulear Palsy. Predeceased by her husband Nick Rapos. Nick and Goula made their home in Scarborough as well as their restaurant business and Goula's own work. She was a master seamstress and enjoyed cooking and gardening. Cherished mother of Mary Incognito (Kelly Cook) and Linda Menton (Ken Menton). She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her granddaughters Jessica and Hayley. She was a sister, sister in law, aunt, cousin and friend to many. In lieu of flowers donations to the Margaret Bahen Hospice or CurePSP.org would be appreciated.

Our mother, Goula, was a warm, compassionate woman who always went out of her way to help others – no matter what. She was a proud woman who had a love for life. She had a wonderful sense of humour. She had many long friendships from work and from her neighbourhood in Scarborough and in Greecekmm,. So many of you here today that she has known for many years.

Goula was born in 1939 in Greece. She was the youngest of 5 children.

She grew up poor and in the country on a farm. As a teenager she travelled to Canada with her future mother in law Mary to reunite with her boyfriend Nick. They all lived together in Toronto and Nick and Goula were married. Nick started a restaurant business and Goula worked in a factory sewing. She would become an expert sewer. And there was always a long line of friends and relatives who would come to the house to have her fix dresses and hem pants.

Goula and Nick lived in Scarborough and enjoyed raising their two girls Mary and Linda there.

Goula loved cooking, sewing, knitting, embroidery and gardening. She like watching wrestling on TV. She loved get togethers with her family and friends. She liked picnics and dances.

Our family grew up with little, but we were always well fed and well dressed. My mother spent hours in her sewing room making beautiful outfits for us to wear. She loved being a mom to Linda and Mary and a wife to Nick. It was heartbreaking when her husband Nick died in 1991 and she was alone at such a young age.

She couldn’t wait to be a grandmother and in 1998 got her wish when Jessica was born and then again in 2000 when Hayley was born. She spent so much time with her grandchildren and was a big part of their lives.
2 years ago she got ill and had to leave her home in Scarborough and it broke her heart. She loved her neighbours and the park down the road. She loved Scarborough Town Centre. She went to live with her daughter Linda. While she wasn’t able to do many things that she used to do because of her illness she learned new things like Facebook, Netflix and you tube. She loved her IPad.
Linda and her family continued to look after Goula until Goula was in her final days and she went to Hospice.

It is an honour to share our memories of Goula with all of you. She will be missed by all, but her memory will live on in us all forever.

We love you mom and baba
