In memory of

Ann Patricia Kassner

January 30, 1942 -  August 12, 2017

KASSNER, Ann Patricia, 1942-2017

Ann died peacefully at home attended by her loving son Stephen Halman and his wife Rita Janzen.

She is survived by her beloved husband Eli Kassner; son Stephen (Rita); stepdaughters Annick Mitchell and Danielle Kassner; grandsons Jacob and Ben Mitchell and Gabriel Perez-Kassner; and sister Fiona Charles (Jill Shefrin). Predeceased by her mother, Louise (Hall) and father, Leslie Newell.

In 1956, Ann immigrated to Toronto from the UK with her parents and sister. Here she attended Downsview and Humberside Collegiates. In 1959 she married Norman Halman and had one son, Stephen. She studied classical guitar with Eli Kassner and they soon began a romance that lasted half a century. Together they established and ran the Guitar Academy of Toronto. Ann was a gifted guitar teacher, especially known for her skill with young pupils.

Ann was first diagnosed with an aggressive cancer in ¬¬2000. After a particularly grueling series of treatments, she bravely bounced back. Even a tracheotomy in 2010 and further extensive surgery in 2014 failed to daunt her. Both times, she demanded the removal of her feeding tube and found creative ways to enjoy her food. Shortly before the cancer recurred in May, she was training to walk 5 kilometres to raise money for cancer research.

Ann’s enthusiasm, loyalty and generosity are legendary within the classical guitar community and beyond. She will be sorely missed by her extended family and many friends.

I had the privilege of meeting Ann and Eli at Baycrest, after years of hearing about their legendary hospitality, musical genius, and general graciousness. They came to my regular Tuesday storytelling group, and Ann will be much missed. She told her stories via her iPad, and they were always timely and remarkable. So sorry to hear that she has left us.

We are saddened to hear the news of Ann's passing, and are thoughts are with family and friends. We loved Ann's directness, and her witty sense of humour. She will, without doubt, be missed by the many people who got to know her. Ann was a great support to the guitar world and, of course, to Eli, and the many students who she came in contact with over the years. May her memory live long, and her spirit fly—as it did in this earthly realm.

Dear Ann,

May she rest in peace! Seeing Ann at every lesson and so many post-concert parties was always a source of joy and great inspiration. She was a wonderful conversationalist and a great human being! I will miss seeing her on my visits to Toronto.

Ann was always present when I went for my lessons with Eli and if he were busy she would come in to chat . She always had a kind word to share and was very encouraging with my playing. She and Eli enriched the lives of a multitude of people ,guitarists and non-guitarists alike. Sincerest condolences to Eli and the family on the passing of your Beloved Ann.
