In memory of

Allen Tak-Kwong Leung

September 3, 1948 -  August 26, 2023

Dr. Allen Tak-Kwong Leung, age 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, August 26th, 2023, at Hill House Hospice in Richmond Hill. Born in Hong Kong in 1948, after completing his secondary school education at St. Paul’s Co-educational College, Allen arrived in Canada in 1969 to study at the University of Manitoba, and then later at the University of Toronto, where he graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry and met his wife of 47 years, Freda.

Friends from university days became their lifelong friends through regular monthly get-togethers (known as the “monthly pot-luck club”), which spanned over nearly half a century.

Allen practiced dentistry for over 40 years and was greatly adored and respected by his many patients, some for three generations.

As a man of many talents, he also had great passions for music and sports. As a lover of music, he enjoyed singing, conducting, and playing many musical instruments, including erhu, violin, and clarinet. A gifted natural athlete, Allen excelled in racquet sports, such as badminton, table tennis, tennis, and pickleball, as well as golf.

Being a culmination of both musical and athletic, ballroom dancing was of particular interest; Allen and Freda enjoyed dancing to ballroom and Latin music for almost two decades. They were frequent attendees to dance parties and birthday celebrations with a group of close-knit, like-minded friends (affectionately called the “ballroom dancing friends”). Eventually, he earned himself the self-appointed title, "honorable lifetime chairperson", who organized birthday parties in the group for the past 10 years--a title to a task that was near and dear to his heart.

As a father, Allen was a constant source of love and support for his three children, which included endless chauffeuring to extra-curricular activities, secret late-night ice cream outings, and most importantly, moral support for life’s inevitable ups and downs. As a doting and fun-loving grandfather, “gung-gung” was best known as a generous giver of red-pocket lucky money, snacks, hugs, and patience. He will be greatly missed at every family gathering.

Allen is survived by his wife Freda; children Valerie (Chris), Bryce (Kristy), Tracy (Dustin); grandsons Elliot, Isaac, Emerson, Arden; brothers Hiu Kwong (Jian Hua) and Frank (Susie), sister Yuk-Fun (Man Chaun); as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A celebration of life and burial will take place on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023. Family and friends are invited to the York Cemetery & Funeral Centre (160 Beecroft Road, Toronto, ON) with visitation starting at 1:00pm and service starting at 2:00pm. This will be followed by a reception afterwards at the New Century Restaurant.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hill House Hospice (https://hillhousehospice.com/donations), whose staff provided Allen (and family) with loving kindness and outstanding expert care in his final days.

I remembered the bike ride many years ago together with two other close friends from canaan fellowship. We started from Edwards gardens to downtown over a distance of more than 10k and it was a bumpy ride along the trail. I also remembered Allen played his favourite urhu music that brings joy and happiness to all of us. We have all the great memories and we miss a good friend like Allen!

Allen was one of those remarkable people who was friendly, helpful and respectful with everyone around him. He made people around him welcome and appreciated. A true Gentleman, one of the very few we have encountered.
May he rest in peace with the Lord.
