In memory of

Ahmed Sarwat Abdel-Hafez

(1943–2021)

The Abdel-Hafez family is saddened to announce the loss of Ahmed, who passed away peacefully on December 30th, in his 78th year.

Beloved husband to Regina for forty-seven wonderful, interesting and sometimes challenging years. Proud father to Omar (husband to Kristen) and Nadia (wife to Mariusz). Adored grandfather to three delightful children who will miss him and their special bonds, Axton, Marcus and Maia.

Ahmed will also be dearly missed by his siblings in Egypt and his many nieces and nephews, who checked in nearly daily on his health in his final weeks. He was the oldest sibling in his family and the only one who emigrated permanently, yet kept in frequent contact with his family back home.

Ahmed moved to Canada in 1969 after completing his engineering degree in Germany and Egypt. He worked at the Four Seasons in Toronto for over 30 years. His true passion was investing in the stock market, and he spent a majority of his leisure time learning about and participating in trading. When he wasn’t practicing gourmet cooking at home, he was an avid collector of books, amongst other things, and built an extensive library (to the chagrin of his wife and amusement of guests to his home where books are still stacked on nearly every available surface). He also loved traveling and was a lifelong learner, prizing his children’s education above all other things.

In light of COVID precautious, an outdoor service only will be held at 1pm tomorrow, December 31st (in keeping with Muslim practice of a burial within 24 hours) with the interment taking place then at York Cemetery (Section 18). Ahmed suffered from Parkinson’s in his later years and strove mightily to overcome the challenges involved, including joining Regina at Dancing with Parkinson’s. In lieu of floral tributes, the Abdel-Hafez family kindly asks that you consider making a donation to either The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or Parkinson Canada in Ahmed’s memory (links provided below). The Abdel-Hafez family greatly appreciates your ongoing support during this difficult time.

So sorry to hear that your father has passed on and it must have been extra challenging for all of you with Covid raging, visiting restrictions and family challenges. No matter how much we expect death to come and how much we believe we are prepared, when it finally happens the shock and grief must still be borne, and it breaks our heart to lose someone who has been such a large part of our lives.

The loss of a parent is something we all experience, but we can continue to hold dear the incredible amount of love that is shared between child and father or mother and can live on with the memories of the times spent together as we grew up under their care and made them proud of us as the child they raised grew into adulthood and succeeded in life.

I did not know your father well, but we have learned to know you, Mariusz and your family and he certainly, through you and Omar left an indelible legacy. He lives on through you and each of your children.

It's perhaps trite to always say this, but his ordeal is over now, and he can rest in peace.

Please extend our deepest condolences to your mother and brother.
